Poll: Rating feature
« on: June 08, 2010, 08:20:46 PM »

I'm trying to decide whether to leave the ratings feature active in the next update of the site.  I'd love to get feedback from users on whether they like the rating feature or not.

I say, take it out in the next update - it's not like we're in a competition here, don't you think?

I don't create art on here, but I have drawn in the past.
I feel that if a "rating" system goes up, those that are just starting to draw or are not confident in their abilities may stop altogether.
Perhaps, if people want to "rate" others, it could be some kind of contest?

I agree with Deathwing. I think it's quite useless.
Khat, the rating system is active right now, Foxeye asks if it's okay to remove it.

Man, I didn't even notice that we had one active now!  Has it been used at ALL?

Regardless -- I'm against rating systems.  It really wouldn't serve any purpose here that I can see, and like others, I think it's counter-productive for a welcoming and encouraging environment.

Thanks everyone who voted and spoke up. :)  Kael and I both prefer to not have a rating mechanism, for the reasons you mention, but I wanted to be sure we weren't in the minority.

That said, if anyone who voted "like it" or "love it" would like to speak up and make a case for it, as perhaps there is an advantage we've overlooked, please don't hesitate to speak your mind. :)

I had no idea that there was a rating system even active now!!  Wow, goes to show how much I look at stuff beyond the art...    :D

I'm kinda of two minds on the subject. On the one hand: if most of the members don't like it or have any use for it, it should go. But, on the other hand, I was something under the impression that this version of EQFanArt wanted to emphasize an artist-based, critique-driven feel. Which is hard to accomplish without some sort of structured feedback (good, bad, or indifferent.) It doesn't much help an artist with their work or technique if the only comments they get are, "wow, I really liked your stuff". But, even I (loudmouthed, crass, opinionated Go-Back that I am) hesitate to comment/rate for any artist unless I know them and/or they're on top of their game. First off, I'd feel too bad about giving someone less than three stars if they weren't expecting or prepared for getting an honest opinion, and second, who needs the heartache and hassle of (well-meaning) defenders jumping into to the mix to tell a poster how wrong they were to rate/say what they did? Who wants to cause misunderstandings or flame wars?

Personally, I welcome any and all comments that someone wants to make on my art (as long as they actually pertain to the work). How else to help myself get better or pursue wider options. But, I also know not everyone who posts here feels that way.

Being somewhat tangential for a moment, have you seen this post, Multimedea?

As far as I'm concerned, this:

Quote
EQFanArt wanted to emphasize an artist-based, critique-driven feel.

...is definitely a notion that Kael and I support. Obviously it's not something we can force on people...it has to evolve naturally from within the community. But posting the above-linked guidelines is our way to, hopefully, provide a common language for safely giving/receiving feedback.

I think I was the second person to comment on it back in March of '09...  ;)

Pshaw, re-skan the thread to see who has been there...what sort of a person do you take me for? *laugh*  Scrolling takes effort.
