Has anyone else done dolls of their elf characters with this base?




The base-creator made a very complete set of bases that I think is great for creating "group photos", so I'd love to collect all the ones I can to put in the top post of the Member Characters thread.  I've posted the elf bases from the set, in case anyone would like to create one.

Making dolls isn't too much different from how you would draw clothes/hair in any other drawing...you just use a slightly different tool, remember to keep it in .gif or .png so it keeps its transparency, and zoom in a LOT. If you've drawn hair and clothing in your own artwork, then you can make a pixel doll

If you are already familiar with a particular art program, then look around for a pencil tool in that program.  (A brush tool will automatically do anti-aliasing for you. A pencil tool won't. And since a doll is supposed to be done with transparency in tact, you don't want anti-aliasing.)  In photoshop it's hidden in the same icon as the brush tool...have to left-click-and-hold on that icon to get it to show up. 

A lot of folks just use MS Paint, though.  This woman has three tutorials for doing hair and clothes with MS Paint. Some of the instructions are specific to that program, but most of it is more a general technique:

We do have several experienced doll-makers around here, so hopefully they'll pipe up with any suggestions.

Yay, I made a doll It's definitely not the finished outfit, but it's the first doll I've ever made, so I'm kinda happy with it

Huh; well, I'd never tried to make pixel-dolls before, either.  Man, that is not easy!  Thank god for the faces being supplied, that's all I can say.  Here's a first try:

And that made me realize...

...that I think you lost your transparency when you saved the file out. Do you still have the original file you worked on?

Okay, I have not really understood the appeal of dolls but, as part of this community, I thought I should try my hand it.  Painting pixel by pixel is a little frustrating for someone who is used to using a brush!

I don't have a character per se, "windrider" used to be a slightly pejorative term motor boaters used towards sailors but we sailors rather liked it.  But here is Windrider as an elf; barefoot as always, with her tankini, sarong, dive knife, and ready to cast a line over to your "wing raft" (which is how I think elves - or at least Wolfriders - would refer to a sailboat).  I don't usually think too much about fashion so I'm not the best costume designer out there, but this was an interesting exercise!

I'm no good at this either, but I'm gonna give it a try.

What I mostly don't like about these pixeldolls is that you see the same base over and over and over and it gets boring, no matter how detailed the outfit or the hair is. But for a group shot it's perfect.

It's good to see someone put something in the hands like that! And the wind-blown hair is a great touch...it also looks sorta salt-tangled. Perfect.

Yes, I believe I do. I work in GIMP. How do I save it without losing transparency?

Well, as somewhat of an explanation, dollz are a quite useful tool
for those of us who do not use a brush!  To create an image with patience and detail that actually looks close to a character we have in mind, (while perhaps being unable to sketch a humanoid character) is a revelation and boon of the internet!  Dollz offer different levels of creation ability to many, and learning to use image software, to shade in a 3-d fashion with a few colors, to use transparent backgrounds and other tricks can be quite an excersize in art education.  I find it is
also relaxing to work in pixel scale; I feel I have more control of
the overall work because it takes a different skill set than
trying to make a correctly proportioned figure by other means.
Sometimes dollz let folks with art handicaps overcome!

I am so happy to see new folks post dollz.  Windrider, Copper
and Sweetwater are seen with joy!
