Forum upgrades and changes
« on: April 22, 2009, 09:44:18 AM »

Just an FYI...I learned that the next version of the gallery software is due to be released soon, and it will have quite a few changes, enough that they are calling it 2.0 (the current is 1.5.6).  So that I don't have to make changes twice, I'm holding off on making any modifications to the site until we've upgraded to that new version.

If folks could help me, I'd like to keep a record here of all the feature requests that have been made:

  • put "new" tag next to user albums that have new items
  • "favorite artists" feature (for personal
  • tiered "latest additions" (ie, a link for the latest 5, latest 15, latest 50, latest 100, etc
  • gallery comment notificatons

Am I forgetting anything that has been requested?

Oh happy day, the beta 1 of SMF Media Gallery 2.0 has been released! Good news is that it sounds like it is as stable as the current version (even though they call it a beta). Bad news is that I don't believe they incorporated my maturity filter. :( That means I have to re-code a bunch of stuff against this new version. So it will take me some time.

I was wondering that when people have a gallery here, if it might be possible to get links in the profiles to those galleries..?

You mean the profile when you click on their name, or something different?  For the former, that does exist...technically. It's just not very obvious. There's a "gallery" subsection at the bottom left of the profile page.

What I'd really like to see, though, is a gallery icon under the avatar in forum posts.

Ooh, that would be neat too. :o :)

I mean when you go to 'members' at the top and click on a name; that profile. I don't see any gallery link there, so I'm not sure what you mean.

When I do that, I get this page:

You don't see the bit I've circled in red?  I wonder if that's an admin only feature...which would be odd...

I'm afraid it is an admin thing, 'cause I only see that in my own profile, not in others. :)

Another thing; I've set my email to be invisable, but I keep seeing it in the members list... wondering if I (and the admins) am the only one seeing it too.

Well, how illogical is that! Huh. I'll look into it.

I think the email is just you and admins, but I'll use "bob" to confirm that. ANd, err, remove it from the screen capture.

Sorry, never got back to you about the email..yes, for non-admins (and those who aren't yourself), a hidden email address shows up as the word "hidden".

There are several material topics in the forum now, perhaps they could be marked more obviously?

Like the "Tools of the Trade - discussion & help" by Icebird is mainly about digital art, and "Artists Question and Answer" by mischievous_valkyrie is about watercolor, and there's also already a marker thread.

It might be an idea to rename the topics. I like the sound of Tools of the trade myself, and then perhaps add the material behind that? What do others think about this?

I think that's a good idea, Afke.  Six months from now, people may not remember that "Artists Question and Answer" is really about watercolor techniques.

*muse*  I like the idea.  I don't like to impose too much structure on art conversations. That is why you haven't seen me sticky any art technique threads or declare any threads the "official art how-to" thread...because I hope that there will be many such threads.  Collecting material into one thread is good for things like, oh, the funny you-tube videos thread, but not for conversations that are at their best when we are free to follow tangents.

That said, I can see how it would be useful to find these threads again. Renaming them to include a common name, like Tools of the Trade or something shorter like [Art Technique] or just [Technique], would be a way to loosely organize these into a series.   If the forum got so active that they started disappearing off the front page, we could create a stickied index that would link to them.  Not so much to tell people "you can only talk about markers in this thread!", but so that they can find the previous conversation easily.

I do like the sound of Tools of the Trade...it's very elfquest-ish. ^_^ That said, would people prefer that I add brackets (it tends to jump out visually when you do that), and/or a shorter "tag"?

Having a thread with links to the art related topics sounds like an awesome idea to me, that way I can find the thread to review it easily, and also look over other mediums etc that have been brought up :)

I think a thread in which we collect links to the various material topics is a very good idea!
It's indeed not so much about just one place to discuss one kind of material, but I think some very useful information and tips is given in some topics that I want to reread when I find time to put them to use (like how to set pen pressure in Photoshop, or all the brands of those watercolor boards). Hate to lose that opportunity because I have to open topic after topic since the title won't tell me.

Sorry, I'm just one who likes to order things, otherwise I get lost in the flood of text. ;D The same topic collecting thread might be useful for posting links to tutorials.

Heads-up everyone: the site's default timezone just got changed from PST to UTC. Your personal time offsets should have been automagically updated -- ours were -- so this change probably doesn't have a visible effect on anyone. Please let Foxeye know if you see any time-related wonkiness though.
