Custom Bound ElfQuest
« on: September 24, 2011, 08:33:41 AM »

Ever since Kael and I married we've had two copies of the EQ comics. We set aside the best copies as collectors archives, and used the others as "reading copies". Conveniently storing the latter has been tricky though, so I recently became enthusiastic about sending the beat-up comics to a binder to have a custom "book" made.

I'm starting out with just one series, so I'm not risking too much if the folks I'm using don't come through. From what I've seen so far, though, of their professionalism and standards, I'm already prepping the next phase of books.   :hyper

These are the mockups of the covers. I think my books will be done in a few weeks.  I'm having so much fun picking spine colors and choosing which covers to use for the next set.

I didn't even know that something like this is possible Looks damn neat. And finally you have it gathered together in the correct order as well.
I think to have something like that done here would cost a small fortune.

Great idea, and they look so professional.

I know are getting yours bound, but this could be a marketable thing for the Pinis in the form of a notebook-style binder with slip covers for the original comics.

That looks so professional, when I first saw the pictures I though it was official merchandise. I esp. love the back, it's all so nicely put together!

:hyper They are in the mail!

He posted some photos of them on the blog (I asked for three ribbons each, since I tend to use these for art refs).

They're great! And you are happy with the quality and binding and everything?
Are the covers worked into the binding or only used on the back?
Anyway, these definitely looks absolutely professional!

Must share the Pretties!  :love

I managed to get five more comic sets converted into custom-bound volumes. :D I also had the last 5 ready to go after I these, only to learn that the fellow doing this is retiring :( Woe! Still, I'm very happy to have as many of these bound as I do. Hopefully I can work directly with the bindery that did these for the remaining books, without the middle-man who did such a great job.  I've rarely met such a professional person, so it's a real loss to everyone who got to work with him.

(this one was accidentally bound in green instead of teal, so it's back with the bindery for a re-do...fortunately the cover is not too hard to re-do)

wow maybe i should get thus done.  All my EQ comics take up space.  With them like this it will much easyer to story then....better then a comic box.

Was the binder company you used Houchen Bindery?  I'm looking to have this done as well so save on space and help preserve my collection.

Also, do you remember what type of binding you chose?  Was it DFAB ultra-binding or Smyth Sewn?

I worked with David Banks of www.singleboundstudios.com...he collaborated with several binderies depending on the style of book someone wanted. I'd recommend him, except for him being semi-retired at this point. He's also retired the part of his website that talks about the techniques the different binding styles used :(

Sorry I can't be more helpful!

Thanks!

I see threads when I open the pages wide and squint, so I'd say closer to smyth.
