Feel better, Branchscamper! I've been fighting with that since January (just saw the doctor AGAIN today).

Ouch, it looks like there's quite a bit still missing. Hopefully everyone is healthy and doing well this week so they can finish up- I know there's been something going around pretty much everywhere.

Well, Zarhan is finally done and submitted ... somewhat later than I had intended, as I got sick over the weekend and my eyes were so light sensitive that I couldn't even look at a computer. Now, on to working on a piece for a local gallery showing ...
But on a good note Washington is very beautiful and I much prefer it over the desertWashington is very beautiful- I grew up there and want very much to move back there someday.

I'm going to try to participate, but I have a gallery showing that I'm participating in, and the deadline for submission is on the same day. XD
I have a couple of ideas, though, so hopefully I'll be able to pull at least one off.

This blog post has an amazing set of photos of both male and female athletes of different body types- some muscular, some not so much. http://ninamatsumoto.wordpress.com/2010/12/18/athletic-body-diversity-reference-for-artists/

Blargh ... technical difficulties. I'm working on finishing up Zarhan now (I have a little corner of the background to finish shading and some touch-ups to do), but have to work this evening, so if I don't get it finished today it will be in tomorrow at the latest.

These are amazing, guys! I can't wait to see 2014. Still need to run through and leave comments on things ...
... on that note, Zarhan is almost done. I'll have him ready around Tuesday.

I know I'm fairly new to the site, but I'd like to volunteer to help out with some of the community moderation if it's needed. I'm not going to be "OMG please pick meeeeee!," but if you need someone to Google new members and watch out for copyright infringements, that's right up my alley.

Ooh, I've got Greywolf rather on the orange side as well ... I'm sure he's prone to sunburn though, and he's certainly outside enough. XD
Can't wait to order mine! And I don't even USE planners. ^.^

Yeah, that's about what I thought it would end up being when I was looking around at printers a few months ago.
I'll wait on your word about the quality ... although I'll probably even wait for all three of them to be out and pick them up at one time (with a little slice of my tax return).

Still struggling with poor Zarhan ... I've rejected five action poses today alone. But at least the other two poses are finished!
Honestly, I hadn't looked at the BoTC comics for a long time (I tend to re-read the short story anthologies instead), and had I remembered how much I disliked the costume design of his one and only appearance, I may not have claimed him knowing that I would have trouble with the clothed pose. It's the pants. I can't get his legs to look right in those pants no matter what I have them doing. *cries*
Hopefully I'll be able to settle on something by the end of tomorrow so I can get him done and move on to something else.
EDIT: Apparently all I needed was some public venting so that my brain could concoct something usable. Working on lines now.

These are all beautiful!! Kudos to everyone for their lovely pieces, and extra kudos to Windrider and Treefox for putting everything together!
I've only gotten a chance to glance at each entry on the formatted calendar for now, but I'm hoping to have time to hit the gallery and comment on the pieces over the next few days.

I don't think I've asked since it was apparently settled- but who are we printing with? Last I checked, you were looking for a printer and had to ask Richard for permission to make physical copies, since we couldn't go through the EQ Cafepress store. Are we donating proceeds to Wolf Park, as was one of the earlier ideas? Printing at cost so there is no profit to worry about? Something else?

Woot! Willowgreen's spread is finished and sent off. Hoping to get the coloring on Zarhan's bonus art knocked out tomorrow (as it's bedtime here).

Back to coloring: all I have left is the clothing on Willowgreen's action pose, and the greenery on that and the pinup. Shouldn't take too much longer. I had forgotten I could overlap some of the poses, so she'll be able to be a full page after all.
... is it silly of me to stupidly excited to look at my post information and find that I am no longer a zwoot?

Oh no! I hope you didn't lose them- have you tried to retrieve the data from your hard drive?
My computer had a mini-crash about two weeks ago and I lost a good chunk of the coloring on my Willowgreen, but I had backed up recently (which is a new thing for me, after my husband lost his entire hard drive last month).

Hmmm, I always do the eyes first ... it gives me a little sense of accomplishment.
... in calendar-related news, I had a little computer crash a couple days ago and lost the coloring on the pieces I was doing for the grids ... I'm going to have to just send the lines in, I think, as I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow evening and have too much to do between now and then to not only start over, but finish completely.

I'm really not going to have the time to do full characters, as I'm having to leave town this weekend and will be gone for a full week, but I'll try to get some single or double pose grid pieces done once my current guys are colored (Willowgreen is coming along much better now). You have a preference between pinup, portrait, or action, for those?

Art and Elfquest / Re: [Tools of the Trade] - Figure blocking / sketching
« on: December 06, 2011, 08:56:10 AM »What's the Loomis method? Do you have a link?
http://alexhays.com/loomis/
Andrew Loomis' books
I use a rather lazy version of the divided ball method for faces that starts on page 40 or thereabouts in Fun With a Pencil, and an equally lazy version of the framing method that starts on page 60 for figures. (I suppose that a lot of other books have taught the same method since then, but these are rather old and will remain my favorite). Figure Drawing For All it's Worth is the real diamond among the treasure, though, as a general reference. Creative Illustration is a great book for those who want to bone up on composition.
Incidentally, I'd recommend Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery by Burne Hogarth for anyone who needs help with clothing ... I don't know if it's available online, as I bought a paper copy.

What I use really depends on the piece and whether or not I'm having trouble with the pose.
I generally subscribe to the Loomis method of blocking out the figures, albeit skipping the wire frame. If I'm having real trouble, I'll actually go back and do the wire frame step, though ... some poses just don't come as easily as others. If there are environmental elements that the figures are interacting with, I'll generally block them in, too, so that I can get everything together in the sketch. I'm kinda' bad about not including backgrounds, so my characters spend a lot of time floating in white space.
It's funny, even though I color almost exclusively digitally anymore, I've had a lot of trouble making the transition to digital sketching. I just like the feel of the pencil in my hand, and I have the habit of turning my paper around while I sketch- it just doesn't work the same having to think about rotating the canvas in Photoshop. I did my forms and initial rough sketch for my EQ pieces digitally, but ended up tinting them yellow and printing them out to pencil and ink. (Which is how I messed up poor Willowgreen's second go-round and ended up with three very square elements).
I've got a tutorial on my process I've been working on for my deviantart and Gaia online peeps, since a few have asked, but I haven't finished it yet.

Still working on the colors for Willowgreen- normally this is the fast part for me (compared to inking), but it's just not going as well as I had hoped. I'm thinking it's because I'm not as fond of my skin palette as I could be ...

Sounds great! Also, staggering the releases of the art a little will make it less overwhelming for everyone involved ... each piece of art will get more individual attention if it's released in a group of 50 than if it's released in a group of 150, because really- if you've got that huge of a gallery to look through, how many people really stop and admire every single piece?
