I want to get back to traditional mediums too! It's been so long since I last painted something. But I've been knitting my first mittens in colorwork, and it's been... interesting! :D

Whenever I feel that my art sucks, I try to remember the graph about how our perception of what looks good advances before our skill to produce it. So, technically we should be more worried when we feel our art looks awesome because our perception skill has plateaued! :D But the best remedy for my art slumps are visits to art exhibitions. There's just something about seeing the fruits of others' art processes that get my artistic juices flowing. :)

Q: Which art style/artist is your favorite? If you don't have a favorite, is there a style you dislike?

Ooh, what a cool project! I love her pose <3

My suggestions would be to add butterflies to the bottom of the image too, as now the portrait feels a bit top-heavy with all the details up there.

The other thing would be to angle the wolf brooch (?) clasp (??) to face the same direction she does. Her face, arms and chest are turned to the same direction, but the wolf faces forward, which breaks the flow, so to speak.

Can't wait to see your progress!

Hmm, I choose my software based on usefulness and pricing.

I used to draw in Gimp for a long time because it's free (and I still use it for more photo editing like stuff), but I needed better ways to modify and post-process my line art (like individual line thickness, size/rotation/position of the drawn elements) without losing quality. I ended up getting Clip Studio Paint for its vector line art feature, and I've enjoyed it along with its 3D and other features. I also like it for being a (semi-) one-purchase program without subscriptions.

When my needs change, I might change the program again.

How do you celebrate Halloween? If you don't, do you have other celebrations before Christmas?

I think I would be more shocked about the walrus since I don't know how it would fit through our building's narrow staircase up to the second floor...  :D And who has taught it to knock??

Question: What is your go-to recipe or comfort food? (I'm hungry!)

It is as jaRf said; we have a hidden thread for the participants, where we discuss our calendar entries. It has been great to have the opportunity to ask for opinions on composition etc!

The deadline has been moved to the end of this month, so people are still working. I finished my entry already.  8)

(Great to have you back, Jeb! And I apparently forgot to inform here of my three-week-long vacation/absence, which has just ended.  :baghead I can continue this, but I'm pretty sure I'll be using more of my free time to the calendar entry, like Yavia. I wonder if it would be easier to have a break until the calendar has been taken care of? Depends on Berit!)

Laluna looks tired when Marut rubs her shoulders, but she seems more relaxed now when the worst part is over. She slowly munches on the herb balls Woodfox gave her, and notices how they make her numb, but doesn't care. She gasps when she feels her own magic kick in, surprised of the sudden boost in healing. She lays still, glancing at Marut, as if telling him everything will be alright.

(Sorry to hear that, Jeb. I hope you get your life back on track soon. You're welcome back anytime you feel like it! I'm sure Berit can think of a great plot twist for Moondrop. :) )

Laluna bites into the stick Woodfox gave her and lets out a muffled scream when he cracks her ribs back in place. The pain is almost enough to make her pass out.

Laluna doesn't really focus on Marut's gaze, her eyes just stare out filled with pain. Her expression relaxes a little when Woodfox has finished the bindings, and her eyes turn towards Marut's but she's too weak to say anything to him.

She tries her best to stay still and conscious.

(Laluna's roll: 6! And go Stormvex! Let's keep the pack alive!)

(Ouch! I knew something went terribly wrong... :'D )

Laluna sneaks as close to Wolfsbane as she can, trying to keep an eye on the undead beast. She closes in next to Wolfsbane when she thinks it's safe, but the giant beasts trashing sends Laluna off her feet and she falls to the ground! She instantly regrets her decision to get so close to the monster, when the beast tramples Laluna and she hears the sickening crack from her ribs. She feels the blood gush into her mouth, and she has to cough, though it sends waves of pain through her chest.

Laluna tries to drag herself away from the beast, stopping somewhere near Wolfsbane, because the pain is too much. She hears Marut's voice near her calling for a healer, and it makes her feel guilty for being so reckless.

"I'm sorry..." she says weakly.

Laluna looks after Wander, perplexed. How can't he see the monster?? She figures it must be some kind of bad magic that prevents him from seeing it.

Laluna turns to keep an eye on the monster, but sees that Woodfox has come to their aid. Since she feels more secure, she decides to try and go help Wolfsbane out of the battlefield, carefully trying to avoid going too close to the fighting.

(Laluna's roll: 1. Ohhhh boy...)

(Go Amberfox!  :o And yayy, Antaka is destroying the bad stuff! :love Mehadrin's scream made me laugh out loud. :D)

Laluna grabs the nearest sturdy branch she can find. It's not the best weapon, but at least it's better than nothing. She gasps when she sees Wolfsbane get trampled under the beast! She needs help, fast! But when Laluna is about to go, she hears Wander's words and gets confused herself.

"Can you not see the... the beast? The beast that looks like a giant rabbit?" she asks confused.

Laluna is starting to think that Wander's eyesight must be worse than she thought...

"Please, hide behind the tree! This spot is too open and dangerous." She gestures towards the great tree that stood next to the tower. She doesn't think Wander is in any shape to help in the battle, especially if he can't see the foe. She decides to wait and see how the battle goes, before she can go to Wolfsbane. The newcomers seem like seasoned warriors to her, and she doesn't want to get in their way with her measly stick.

How do you even end up in those kind of situations?? :D

I can't remember anything super juicy, but there was an awkward moment that happened late in the 90's when I was a young teenager.

I usually came home from school a few hours before my parents returned from work. The house is at a rural area, so there weren't any friends to hang out with, so I spent my afternoons at home alone or with my little sister. One afternoon, the phone rang. We still had a landline telephone that the whole family used, so I answered with my whole name, as was the custom. On the other end was a man, who I guessed was my father's acquaintance as he asked if Jussi (=my dad) was at home. I answered that he wasn't, but he didn't hang up. Instead he started talking about my dad and his work and all kinds of things. He seemed like a very social person, and I replied to his questions about my dad and our home the best I could. It was a nice conversation which I enjoyed. He was easy to talk to because of his familiar way of speaking.

At some point the conversation seemed to steer towards the end, and he said something like, "It was very nice talking to you, Jussi talks so much about you." It seemed a bit odd, especially since dad isn't the kind of person to talk much about his personal life, but I thought that maybe dad did talk about me at work, what did I know... He continued, "Who knows, maybe we can meet up sometime, spend the evening together? It would be so nice to finally see what Jussi's wife looks like."

The word "wife" made me freeze. I was old enough to realize that he thought he was having a "friendly-flirty chat" with his work buddy's wife. If the guy had known my parents better, he would've realized from the start that he was talking to his work buddy's underage daughter. You see, my parents have never gotten married, so while me and my little sister have our father's surname, my mom still has her maiden name. So when I introduced myself in the beginning he must've thought I was the Mrs. of the house, and since housewives were still quite common at the time, he didn't question how there was an adult at home so early in the afternoon.

I was so dumbfounded that I didn't have the courage to correct him at that point, because we had been talking for quite a while. I struggled in embarrassment through the rest of the conversation until he hung up. Still to this day I wonder if my voice really sounded so mature that someone would mistake it for a grown-up. I don't know if he ever found out about the mistake -- or my parents!  :D

(I don't mind if you continue! I tend to also wait for others before I type my answer. Though this time I'm just late! Sorry about that. :D But I agree with Amberfox: when the characters are separated enough, it's safe to continue with those that are more active. And if some happen to get in the middle of the battle, they can be "carried along".)

For a moment Laluna is afraid that Wander decides to walk away again, but his hesitant attempt to touch her makes her more confident. He clearly doesn't want to be alone, and she's going to try to help him the best she can. She smiles a little, relieved, when he nods at Laluna.

"Come, let's return to--" she starts, when suddenly a giant snow rabbit appears out of nowhere!

"W-What is that??!" Laluna utters, but snaps out of confusion when she sees that the rabbit is going to attack! Immediately she looks around her, trying to find anything that she could use as an improvised weapon to defend herself and Wander.

(Laluna's roll: 4)

"N-No! I don't want you to perish... not everyone is against you here. That is why I'm offering my help. Like you helped us when you let us in during the storm." Laluna tries to convince Wander of her sincerity. She looks disheartened for a moment when Wander just keeps walking, but she decides to follow him.

"Do you have a place to go to..? I think it would be better if you stayed and we searched for another holt. After all, it is your home... and we are in better health to search for a new home than you. The others seem to be thinking of exploring the surroundings anyway."

Laluna knows that Wander won't survive outside for long. She hopes that by convincing him to stay at the tower, she might have a chance to heal him with Stormvex.

(Laluna's persuasion roll: 5!)

(I wonder what the hatchlings are going to look like! :love)

Laluna hurries after Wander, only briefly glancing at the other elves outside. She's not sure if she'll be able to convince Wander of anything...

Despite his sending, she catches up to him.

"A tribe does not have members based on need, but friendship. Let us help you, friend." she says, slightly touching Wander's arm.

"If you don't want to stay with us, at least let us try to heal you before you go." she pleads.

(Laluna's persuasion roll: 2. Not very convincing! :-\)

"I'm not sure he will listen to me either... but I must try." she nods to Stormvex, though she doesn't seem very confident.

She looks at Marut and smiles back at him, touching his arm despite the awkwardness. She finds his words encouraging and she's glad he's there.

Laluna grabs one of the winter cloaks and heads outside, trying to find Wander before he goes too far.

Laluna is troubled when she sees Wander walk outside. She turns her attention to Stormvex when he locksends, and she looks horrified when he suggests killing Wander as an option.

"No killing! I know he's dangerous, but he is kind, too. I'd like to try to heal him with you." she looks at Stormvex, pleading. "At least then he could travel with or without us... Maybe there's something in the mountain that causes his condition. I'm also worried about two of our friends who went tracking with a prisoner but have not returned..." she thinks of Toad and Antaka and hopes that Yare hasn't somehow attacked them too, though it's unlikely. Both Toad and Antaka seemed able to take on Yare. Laluna is agitated when she thinks that they might've crossed paths with another monster, instead...

(Great to hear you're feeling better, Berit! Just don't do too much too soon.)

Laluna studies Wander's expression, wondering how he will take all the news. She would like to ask him if he has any idea of his sudden change in character but now is probably not the right time.

Her thoughts are interrupted by Moondrop's open sending.

"A cave..?" she wonders aloud. She can't help but smile when she thinks how efficient Moondrop has been in exploring the surroundings. Maybe the cave could give some answers to the weird happenings?

She turns her attention towards Stormvex, when he asks if they could move Wander. She hesitates. Wander's constitution just isn't good for traveling, considering he was stabbed just recently. But the tower with all the rock around them isn't safe if Wander turns again... maybe with Stormvex's bond beast it could be possible to move him?

She's about to answer Stormvex's question, when Wander suddenly struggles to stand up and heads for the door. She can hear the pain in his voice and remembers him speaking of being a burden earlier, 'whom they should just leave behind'. Laluna stands up and takes a few steps after Wander, reaching for his arm to stop him.

"You will die if you go out alone! I know you must feel guilty about what has happened, but maybe we can try to figure out what's behind it. I still feel there's something strange in this place... Maybe the cave that Moondrop found has clues to what's going on? And there are more of us who can try to help now." she reasons. She hopes with Stormvex's help they could finally heal Wander's body, at least...

"If you feel it's too... dangerous to stay here, then we should all go. I'm not sure this place does good to anyone, considering we thought we battled monsters when they turned out to be ordinary beasts instead..."

Laluna is startled by Moondrop's aggressive response to Wander's question, but she at least had the courage to reveal the truth, unlike Laluna. She looks after Moondrop and fears that she'll leave them for good... The area was still strange and possibly dangerous. They have better chances at survival as a group, she thinks. It makes her think of Toad and Antaka, who'd taken Yare for a walk. They haven't heard of them for a while now. She hopes they are after a great prey rather than the other way around.

Laluna's gaze turns briefly to Stormvex, when she receives his sending. Her expression is regretful, and she doesn't nod. She doesn't know how to put anyone to sleep unless hitting them and she wasn't ready to hit Wander again.

She turns her eyes sheepishly towards Wander. His eyes look so different now compared to the violent and cold Wander earlier. She wonders how could he change like that so suddenly?

"It's true..." she replies, lowering her gaze.

"...but at the same time, it was not you. Somehow, you woke up as a stranger. You became this... cold Wander, and you had no memory of ever meeting us."

Laluna studied Wander's expression to see if he knew about this change in him.

Laluna flinches away from Wander's touch. His hand and gesture remind her too much of the blow. She can't help but feel insecure around Wander now, even if it makes her feel sorry for him. When Wander asks her what happened to her face, she seems unsure how to answer him.

"It's nothing serious... We have a lot of new faces here now, I hope you don't mind them staying around." she changes the subject, taking a glance at the others. She doesn't know what the others think of Wander, especially since many of them only saw his violent side until now...

Laluna's expression turns serious when Stormvex tells her one of them is injured, but since he doesn't seem to be too concerned, she decides to wait for their arrival. She smiles with anticipation when Stormvex suggests they could try to combine their magic.

"I'm willing to try. Maybe that way I can learn to control my own magic better, too." Laluna is glad to get to know more elves with magic.

Laluna turns her gaze momentarily towards Wander when he starts to come to. When she receives Stormvex's sending, she decides to nod in answer. She has seen Wander change once before, and he was unconscious before it happened. This Wander seems to be the gentle one.

"Don't worry, Yare is alright... You should rest." she speaks calmingly to Wander. She doesn't know what decision the others would arrive at, but in any case, it would be easier to keep him calm.

Laluna looks up to Marut and smiles. His presence has always made her feel calmer somehow.

"Some new leathers would be great. Wander gave us some scrap fabrics, but there's not much left."

Her eyes widen when she hears that Marut and Moondrop may be related.

"Oh, what great news! Now that you mentioned, you two have similarities." she smiles, delighted. Not only their hair, but they both are private persons in a way. She wonders how closely they might be related.

After washing herself, she decides to put on some of the scrap fabric clothes she made earlier, though she makes a mental note to adjust their fit later.

She turns her attention to Stormvex when he asks about her healing abilities.

"I'm not sure... but I could try? I haven't tried to strengthen my magic with another's before."

She wonders if it could work on Wander. It might help to fix his lungs.

Her eyes turn to Wander when she hears him moan. She feels agitated because she doesn't know if the Wander who's waking up is the kind one, or... Nevertheless, she decides to stay nearby, watching him.

Laluna follows the others to the tower. She's amused by Mehadrin's endearing words towards Moondrop. It seems he still clings to her for protection.

When Laluna sees Marut's hesitation, she guides him downstairs.

"It's warmer down here."

She walks over to Wander's throne and fixes the bedding she made for him earlier. The memory of the recent violent events still lingers in her mind. Despite the warmth from the heatstone, the place feels colder to her somehow.

When she's sure that no-one needs her help, she takes the water vessel and steps a few paces away from the others and starts to remove her blood-ruined leathers. Laluna scrubs the dried blood off her skin as best she can. She'll have to make some new clothes for herself, maybe by modifying the winter clothes she made earlier.
