Zoetgras with her mommy
by Afke
Yes, more!
This is Zonnestraal from Zonnemeer Borg with her daughter Zoetgras, one of my newest characters. I wanted to draw her as a little toddler. Her daddy is my character Lispel from Zomerbron.
Much more comfortable with this way of coloring (Copic markers), although I'm still trying out the white ink for extra highlighting. It's not yet working the way I want it to.

Good job on the kid! I have a feeling toddlers are hard to do; I haven't tried to do any elf babies or toddlers yet, but now that we're getting some at RTH, I'm gonna have to figure it out.

Ooh, but I like drawing kids. I think the thing most people do wrong is drawing them as smallersized grownups, while kids actually have other proportions. Have some examples nearby when you draw them, really helps.
Although I might have some less problems with them, because I already draw my grownup elves in more humanlike proportions - they still have frickin' big heads compared to humans, but to Elfquest not so, I feel I'm in between them. My style just evolved that way, 'cause I wanted them to look less childlike I guess. [Background] When I draw elves in sitting poses I always wonder "Now what are they supposed to sit on this time??" They have some plantshapers around in both holts, so I came up with this. |

Oh, that's just so sweet! I agree with the others: you've done a great job with the little one. (Zoetgras? Which I suppose means something in Duch, lol) I find toddlers really hard to draw, not just because of the proportions, but also because of the facial features. So: two thumbs up!
Did you use a reference for the pose, btw? It looks really natural |

Yes reference; a few years back I'd go through my mom's magazines and sketch all the poses I liked, putting them in a folder for when I needed a pose but didn't know what kind. I don't remember where this one was from, but it was in that folder, so...
Zoetgras can be translated to Sweetgrass. Zonnestraal is Sunbeam. |

nice colors! I'm always facinated how some people can use copics, I never got the hang of them, tried them many times... but you manage to make the skin look realistic and lively, I like the idea in this picture, gentle moment between a child and mother...

Wonderful illo; you don't get to see many featuring a mother and infant very often. The coloring is soft and the shading is well done.
I can see Zoetgrass' young adult outfit already in the making. |

Berit, mommy is always the most huggable for little kids.
Amberfox, even in earlier outfits or when I'm bored with the old design and come up with a new, I always keep certain elements that I feel fits the character and might be something they call 'favorite'. This can be the length of the sleeves, or perhaps a certain color, and with Zoetgras it's definitely the fringes. I do however think I could've done something different with her colors here. The purple has always been her mother's color as well, so I think that should definitely be there in Zoetgras' kid clothes as well - but I could've picked some lighter hues to make it more childlike and give her mother the darker ones. |

Yeah, moms are always best for that!
I think that's true for the most part for all of us. We tend to gravitate to something that we like and stick with during large parts of our lives. Maybe elves more so because they live so much longer. In either case, I think the colors and hues you chose for Zoetgras and Zonnestraal's outfits look fine: Mom's attire reflects her name by being on the sunny side, warm and spring-like, while Zoetgras' outfit looks more autumn. Also makes her stand out more. |

You're right, Zonnestraal seems to blend in with the background a little. So it all worked out. :]

And even better for Zonnestraal, if she lets Zoetgras crawl around amongst the grass and bushes, she'll be able to spot her easily!

This is a really sweet picture, and a beautiful one! It makes me wonder what they're looking at -- a bird, perhaps? Of all things Zonnestraal's anklebone caught my eye.
