Moonshade as Cinderella as The Mysterious Princess 3 of 4
by Treefox
The third one! Cinderella's second nur grants her the dress for the ball at the castle. I thought that Moonshade would be the right character for this mysterious appearance at the ball and I think she can wear those salmon pinks and violet shades.
I love love love that her dress has a Phoenix theme. I watched the film all my life and only in late adulthood I realized that it's a Phoenix. D'oh! That's actually quite clever. The Phoenix theme is repeated on her belt not visible here. And I finally tried out a technique that joselle used to use and I always wanted to try: I took the stitched pattern from her dress and the Phoenix from pictures online and put them on top. It was really interesting to work with that.
So here's Moonshade swooping into the ballroom (actually after putting on a veil) catching the Prince's eye who's wondering whether he met her before...so they share a dance, but she will only agree to marry him if he can answer her riddle:
Cheeks stained with ash, but it's not the chimney sweep,
A hat with feathers, crossbow over one shoulder, but it's not a hunter,
A silk woven dress with a train for the ball but it's not a princess,
who is it?
As he can't answer she rides off into the night like a badass, losing her shoe in the process.

Again, I think this is the right choice for this outfit. Maybe one of the Sun Villagers might have worked, but na, I think Moonshade works. It is a bit strange to see her so...cheerful, but It's about time she can show that side of her. Her glancing over her shoulder with that smile is very playful and engaging! We all knew she had that side to her and it's great to see it rendered so beautifully. I really love the jeweled hairpiece/tiara, and the simple yet stylized background again works perfectly. The imagine still strongly suggests winter, which appears to really be Moonshade's season. The prince is a moron to not immediately give chase! Those big round eyes (glad you chose to go with them instead of the narrow look she gained later on) and strong square jawline are captured amazingly well here; she's gorgeous, even in pink (sorry, not a fan of the color). I'll be sorry when you complete the series but can't wait for the next installment. Glad you were inspired to draw these and share them with us! I have to step up and finish my illos for December!

Thank you again for the awesome comment!
Oh, the prince did give chase immediately! After all, he finally found his true love. It's a gorgeous chase scene through the snow covered hills and forests at night...*sighs* And honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of the dress color myself. So much salmon pink... The real thing is even more pink, my version is more on the purple side. And you are right, I looked at more "classical" Moonshade for this. Her eyes did turn out huge though... But I like her owl-like look, so it works for me. So so happy that this background is working and actually giving off a winter-y vibe! Thank you! In the movie the castle is lit really brightly, I wanted to tone that down a little. One more to go! I can't believe it myself! The last one is more complicated though, as it's going to feature Nikolaus, her horse, again. But I will draw a character that I have only drawn once so far and I think she's going to look stunning in the final outfit. I now need to find some good reference for the horse and then I'll start the final illo! With six more illos from you in December, this could be a wonderful month!! |

I got to admit, surprise you picked Moonshade for this one, though maybe I should have expected it. After all, who else would havevmanaged all those details, and fit into those Color? Ah, But I love it! I love how you captured her playful smile, and the phoenix motif! And even those vandel holders, urgh, so good!

Oh, thank you! I also thought immediately of Moonshade because of the color alone. And also she has this mysterious and playful side, that fits with teasing the prince and giving him this riddle. We rarely see Moonshade playful, it was fun to draw. Who would you have picked for the ball gown, I'm curious!
And, of course, I wanted to put in that phoenix! That idea just entices me. At first I thought of drawing her in her long coat, which I also love, but then I couldn't have shown the phoenix, so... Those candle holders were a slight pain in the ass... but they were in the movie and somehow I felt a good way of showing that she's now in a fancy castle. |
