Hey, Mom! Look what I found! Can we keep it?

This idea came to me while I was working on all the other Songjoy sketches and I had to do it before I wimped out. I just had the image of Songjoy innocently enjoying a night on a rocky outcrop in the Vast Deep, playing and singing to the moons when Lilypad happens on him. And hey, since Mom seems to bring home strange lander males, she thought she'd grab herself a pet as well. Not that I thought she'd snag him because he's ever so attractive, it's that Mom does it, why not her? A new pet (what's the equivalent of newspaper and a chewtoy?)! Poor Songjoy felt her long before she snagged him, but as an empath, he can only detect the minds and the moods, not the thoughts. And after being dragged under, he's not sure what to do since he adores cubs and is afraid he might hurt her in the struggle to escape. And when he senses Mom's mind...this can't possibly end well. Good news is that his empathy has a tendency to attract animals that might help rescue him before he drowns. Good thing he is a great swimmer. I may need to recolor Yeee; I noticed the way I have her hair, it looks like her face is distorted, but it isn't. Damn it. Looked great before coloring. Well, enjoy the humor. Hope I did your gang justice, Yeee! And yes, a lot of the reds, oranges, and yellows were demolished when scanned. May post the photo I took with my camera later.

Hahaha, how great ist this! Aww, Songjoy is so considerate. He doesn't want to spoil the cub's fun. You've been really productive! And I don't think Yeee's face looks distorted at all... maybe it's the differently colored eyes? All looks great to me.

Hmmm, well, thank you, but it seemed distorted to me. The final word will come from Yeee, though! I don't know why, but I thought the idea of this was hilarious, and I was that kid that would bring home all sorts of critters and ask my mother the exact same thing. I got to keep the gopher tortoise, but Mom put her foot down with the little green grass snake. Anyway, despite all the trouble I had with this, it was fun to draw. I had to cut the very ends of the edges off because the paper slightly exceeded the limit of my scanner size and I had to rearrange some poses and placements to make everything fit. Still, I'm happy with the results.

Awww, you actually brought home critters? That's so cute. I had to look up what a gopher tortoise is. Wow! Not the smallest tortoise...

Mom to this day rolls her eyes and sighs about my propensity to drag home animals and ask the exact same question. Yes, gopher tortoises are pretty huge. When I brought that one home with me, it was so huge and heavy (I was about 6) that I had to squat slightly and brace the back of it against my thighs just to support it. Mom thought it HAD to be an escaped pet, so she sent me around the neighborhood to make sure it wasn't. So, I got a pet tortoise. Sadly, they are now extirpated from the area. But Mom did take pictures of me trying to hold it. As for Songjoy in this, he's still stunned he got grabbed and dragged under by a cub (pip?). He's just beginning to try to figure this all out, and how to escape without harming her.

I already thought from afar that these characters look familiar. Hence, be careful near water shores and bridges... ;-)

Let's hope Songjoy learns the lesson.

Aww, that's a bitter-sweet story about the tortoise. But it's very considerate of your mom to check if it wasn't someone's lost pet.
