We shouldn't - 2020
by Berit
Ah yes one of the hidden romances of Elfquest! or rather the terrible Finnish translation of Elfquest!... (the old ones were fine, but the one after that, whew!) In the book Bearclaw, there is the moment where One eye loses his eye and the translators mixed up speech s bubbles of Bearclaw and Clearbook! that results Bearclaw telling One-Eye...
"Try to rest, beloved..."
So I made fanart of this official couple of the Finnish translation! if I find the book I will definitely scan the page and post it in the forums, but it wasn't where the other books were!... also, did this in anondraw https://www.anondraw.com/collab#private_j6meh,-118,-87 and Czarine can take the blame as she dared me to draw it!...

No! Somehow you managed to make Bearclaw look hilarious and creepy at the same time! I feel sorry for One-Eye, though. He needs a savior!

That is hilarious; the illo and the history behind it. Yeah, those screwups in speech bubbles can cause some really interesting scenarios. Love that you remembered it and drew this, it's truly funny. The look on Bearclaw's face is rather disturbing, very predatory, but so typical of him. Poor One-Eye reminds me so much of those early sound movies where the actors still had that overly melodramatic action and gestures. I can almost hear how they sound, making this even funnier.

Haha, awesome! Poor One-Eye! Yeah, we had some weird translation hiccups as well... or empty speech bubbles...poor translators were running out of things to say...

Sometimes I Wonder how some mistakes happen... Some are understantable... But some mess the thing up In a big way! Like enemies shouting couraging things to the main characters or characters that are clearly In a relationship are translated being cousins while they Kiss eachother In the background...

Haha, so weird! But some cases, I guess it was the editing more than the translation...
But definitely some failure on quality check department. |

Pffhahha! We've had one mix up with the speech bubbles that I remember seeing. Was in the end of Shards I think? It was really weird, it was a woman saying '-fingers!!?' and one of the trolls Cutter had with him making a scary noise, ' BOO!'
Thar expression is dead on for Bearclaw XD |

You know this could be something to do (like the Valentines). I know there are people on YouTube that use google translate and they take popular song lyrics, translate them into a different language and then translate them back to English with hilarious results. We could do this with scenes from EQ and then reinterpret the artwork based on how bad the translation is.

@Maggie: Makes me want to use Google Translate to translate the Finnish version of EQ into English, and see how much is lost in translation... Gotta find my only Finnish copy of the first issue the next time I visit my parents.

I even remembered to take the first Finnish issue with me, but I'm traveling tomorrow, so it'll have to wait. I'm curious to see what you come up with, Maggie!
