Our Holt#5: Blackberry

In the tradition of Mirror and her stunning art, "Our Tribe," I was inspired to do similar. Initially, I was going to group them as Mirror has, but then I got lazy trying to get everyone organized (especially since some do not have heights listed) and complicated because I kept the individual illos large. I also wanted to draw characters that haven't had a lot of time in the spotlight, for the most part. As always, the scanner just doesn't do the colors justice, but at least you can get an idea of what I was going for. I already have about a dozen characters drawn, but I intend to color them all instead of inking them. Takes longer, but I just felt like trying to do it. I hope I've done everyone justice, but if I haven't, let me know and I'll make the corrections. And if anyone would really like to see what I can do with their character(s), contact me. I'm featuring Startear's Blackberry, and I hope I captured her look correctly. I wanted to retain a lovely, large, and in charge look for her, very simple and plain but effective. As far as I'm concerned, this lady looks like she could accomplish whatever she set out to do. I have a limited amount of color pencils to work with while I'm out of town, so I wasn't able to achieve the right brown for her pants, but I think I managed. I hope I flattered her; my mother really dislikes this illo, but then she thinks the elves have heads that are out of proportion.

Oh my! That's my girl! Look at her! I love her pose, she looks so confident and calm. Her hair is amazing, I want to run my fingers through it. Her thick kissable lips are great! You really did well on her clothes, especially her top! And I love how freckled you drew her! Her belt came out great too. I know it is an odd color, but when I was working on cloth design, there was so much brown shades that I felt it needed to be broken up. What amazes me is the rock. I love how different colors shines through, not just grey.

Thank you thank you thank you!

I'm very glad you like it. None of the work I post is close to what it really looks like, but I think she came closest. I always saw her as a confident, calm, and "get it done" sort, even though it was just the one illo you did. I'd want her on my team. I tried to stick as close as I could to your original design, even though our styles are so different. Again, I'm glad I did her justice.

I love her pose and attitude!

Personally if I draw freckles, I'd use colors only (or shading only, if it's a grayscale drawing). Drawn makes them look too much like warts.
They're also located mostly on places where the sun touches the skin the most; so not so much on the inner part of the arms, or under the arms.

I agree, Afke. This was the first time I tried to do it this way. I didn't think they turned out more like warts, but a bit too prominent. If I had strictly done b/w, the freckles would've looked more effective. Using strictly color for freckles can also look awkward, like you accidentally dropped color on the paper. Maybe I should really explore other media, maybe I could be more effective that way. And yes, freckles tend to be more where the sun beats down on the skin, but they can be all over the body, and prominent in places that don't see much sun. My mother is one of those.

That thick hair! I agree on the pose and the calmness. Lovely shading on the clothes as on that rock.

I just love freckles and body marks - these are so fresh and new.  Blackberry is a great character; sturdy looking and, yes, capable.
