Signs of Spring

Done as a trade for Fadestar's owner, Linda.  Fadestar has only recently come into her gliding powers.  I mostly had the idea of wanting to show her zooming up amongst a flock of birds, and picked bluebirds for the brightness and contrast to the wintery landscape.  I… need more practice figuring out how to draw elves in gliding poses.  Looked at tons of refs of bluebirds; I like how faintly annoyed they look.

Notable re. the background, I didn't sketch it first but just drew it in the lightest-grey marker, and built up from there.  The sky and river-color are effects in PS.  I did this as a composite, to make coloring the background easier and also so that I could do the pink gliding glow on Fadestar later.  Unfortunately, I didn't plan out the layout of the landscape as well as I should have -- I didn't want her to block so much of the river itself.  Oh well.

Brush pen inks, Copic markers, effects in PS.

Oh! only noticed this this now! Wow! wonderful colors! and drawing floating elves is hard work! I really like what you did with the background here! truly awesome! I think it's hard to draw landscape from that perspective to look like something!...

This is just so lovely. The background still works so well, even if she is covering up a large part of the river. The birds annoyance really works just through the way they are composed around Fadestar. And that winter outfit! Your outfits always rock. So beautiful!
It's interesting, as I always found drawing flying elves pretty easy. You are not bound to one level and have a larger freedom of poses.

Thanks!  I can't take credit for the design of her costume, though -- her owner Linda designed it, I'm just drawing it.  ;)  It *is* fun to get to play with flying poses, since you don't have the same restrictions as characters that are land-bound.  I guess what I ultimately didn't like with this attempt was that I felt like the angle of her outstretched leg didn't quite work, or something.  It's hard to put my finger on.
