Dawn Hunt

This year's SeSa gift for Foxtail's owner, Angie -- Foxtail on a hunt, along with Thornbow and Crackle (in the background).  For one of the tribe's main huntresses, I realized that Foxtail had never actually been depicted hunting, and I liked the idea of trying to convey the excitement of the pursuit, but also trying to nail that quiet, lavender feeling of the dawn light on a snowy day.

Refs used for the wolves and the mule deer, as usual.  Media: brush-pen inks, Copic marker colors, effects in PS.

Ta-da! A post! And I get the first one!

Beautiful as always, Eregryn; I am always amazed at how you depict characters so vividly and you certainly captured the lavender haze extremely well (although I tend to be buried under tons of thick blankets with a giant mug of hot chocolate that time of year). Foxtail certainly seems VERY enthusiastic in the hunt and I suspect that deer isn't long for the world. The only thing off I noticed that is that Foxtail's wolf appears to be much more focused on what's ahead rather than on staying at the deer's side. Terribly nitpicky, and not a major distraction by any means.

I always wanted to capture a dawn scene like this one. Whenever I see such a lighting in real life, I think that it must be looking good in EQ related picture. You captured this certain mood wonderfully. It is so beautiful! Your usage of Copics is so stunning!

Oh, I like this! I recently made a scetch of a hunting scene as well and know the struggles. I think this one turned out quite nice! The animals look great and the action is there. I also like the dim purple orange light, though it makes me rather think of evening than morning.

Hunting pictures are always something I enjoy! I think the deer's expression is very good, as if he is panting and getting ready to warn others of the danger that chases him! very nice! colors also give the nice, dream like feel to it all, winter is many ways magical and you captured that well...

Thanks, guys!  Once again -- the Copics really only get me so far, and end results like this are a combo of the base hand-coloring job, and using various brushes and filters in Photoshop.  So here, a lot of the lighting and lavender tones, the mist and the sky, are all PS.

Dreamcat -- heh, I think it would work well either for dawn or twilight.  I have a hard time deciding how to differentiate them sometimes.  Personally I tend to use more pink for dawn, and more orange for sunset, but in reality, those colors are appropriate to both times, so it's really up to the viewer.  ;)
