Dreamflight and Newt: Bird-feeding
by Eregyrn
Done as a trade for Dreamflight's former owner. Dreamflight is one of the tribe's enthusiastic bird-watchers and bird-callers, a hobby/skill she has shared with Newt (who is technically her… hmm, great-uncle, but due to timeline shenanigans, is also her younger adopted "brother"). This was a chance to show that connection, and also do both of them in their new, updated looks.
Hand-feeding songbirds is a real thing you can do, and I really, really want to do it, but have not gotten the chance to yet. I looked at a large number of refs for songbirds. I put the goldfinches in there because Dreamflight's cub-name was Goldfinch. The rest are just some of my own personal favorite songbirds -- titmice, chickadees, and a female cardinal.
Usual media: brush-pen inks, Copic marker coloring.

It would be tempting to adopt Dreamflight just on that basis: I'm quite the bird enthusiast myself, even have a parrot. I was happy I identified them correctly; they're all backyard birds in my neck of the woods, although two mostly in the winter time. Looks like it's autumn/winter there as well from their clothing. Yeah, handfeeding birds is fun, at least for geeks like me, and I even have a skill of upsetting bluejays to answer my calls (so territorial). Anyway, beautiful work as always, and I have to say I also really love your coloring style. You give skin tones such warmth and vibrancy as well as that wonderful fluidity in the bodies that just makes it all so believable. I'm envious.

Sweet! I also like birds. Always a joy to see them interact and looking for food in our yard. It's actually fun to leave berries on the bushes just to see the birds enjoying them.

The birds turned out really nice! Also like his face a lot, it looks so fresh and attentive while hers looks rather dreamy. The dynamic brush inks look impressively neat. I usually struggle with wobbly brush tips... >.>

Thanks, everyone! Dreamcat -- oh, I have problems with wobbly brush ink lines, myself! Sometimes I can control it, sometimes not. That's partly why I always scan my inks and do some clean-up on them in Photoshop, before printing them out and then coloring. (The other reason is that the laser-printed lines won't smear at all, and I can put the linework on a specific kind of paper that's good for coloring.)
Amberfox -- it could be autumn, although you can't quite know from Newt's outfit. He's very covered-up because he really is an albino (thus his skin is just a bit more pink-toned than Dreamflight's), so he covers up whenever there's the least chance that the sun could hit him. |
