Farscout, Copper and Flea

This was done as a Secret Santa piece for Whitney, who owns Farscout.  It's an illustration for her story "Changing of the Guard".  In it, Flea, who was Farscout's wolf-friend, slowly changes her bond to his daughter, Copper, whom Flea has a part in raising.

I looked at a bunch of different wolf refs for the lying-down position and the expression.  I liked how the latter came out, but overall I feel like Flea is probably a little bit too small.  And black wolves... man, they're hard to do!

Brush pen inks, Copic marker color, some after-effects in PS.

The wolf´s pose looks very natural and relaxed, using refs was porbably a good decision here. I like the warm and loving look on the father´s face, but I wonder why the girl looks so worried. I don´t think she´s too small but maybe a little skinny.

No, I wasn't worried that the girl (Copper) was too small (I was shooting for the very skinny build of the elf children in the OQ, that is often what sticks out to me about them) -- rather that the wolf, Flea, ended up being too small next to the adult Farscout.  ;)  Farscout is quite tall, but still, the wolf is a bit smaller than I'd like; although it's probably fair to say that Flea is just a small wolf, too.

Copper looks worried because, in the story, her father is departing the Holt and instead of going with him, his wolf-friend Flea starts to look troubled and then just plunks down and won't go anywhere.  Copper -- who has been wolf-sat by Flea throughout her childhood, and who loves her father's wolf -- is worried that Flea is sick, but her father has already figured out that Flea is simply more interested now in being Copper's wolf-friend than his.  Flea's omega nature is more suited to being the wolf-friend of a child, anyway, and Farscout is glad to know that his little girl will have the wolf to keep her company while he's away.
