High-and-Low

Finished this a few weeks ago actually. This was done as an entry for the recent "Random Ancestors" contest at RTH -- character pairings were chosen at random, as were activities. I got "Blacksnake and Beesting, playing a game". We have a few established games, and this is one that hadn't been depicted before -- it's kind of a steeplechase-race between elves, who spice things up by agreeing on handicaps beforehand, including "carrying another elf". Once I was assigned Beesting, I knew that she was Blacksnake's age-mate, which offered a nice opportunity to show them when they were young. Here they are about 18, while Blacksnake's brother Axehand in the background is in his mid-30s, and he's carrying Melody, who's actually the aunt of the two guys, but the same age as Axehand.
Young Blacksnake here is lighter and more nimble than his older brother, and so is doing well on the obstacle-course part of the race; but the ultimate winner is in doubt, as Axehand can probably catch up to him when they hit a flat stretch.
Done with the usual brush-pen inks and Copic marker coloring plus after-effects in PS. I looked at a lot of refs of people giving piggyback rides. (I wonder what the elves would call that? Jeedai and I have been trying to figure that out.) And I particularly want to mention that I am indebted for heavy background inspiration here to a wildlife artist named Hayden Lambson. He does gorgeous work on both wildlife and landscapes in a hyper-real style. This piece ended up borrowing a lot more (for the background layout) from a black-bear piece of his than I originally intended, so I mustn't take much credit for that aspect of it.

I hadn't taken a proper look at it before, but I LOVE that background. I don't know which parts you borrowed, but I just love the colors and you've blended it so well with markers and linework in both back- and foreground.

I haven't commented on this at RTH, but everytime I see it, I think I need to log in and tell you how awesome this pix is! (And I still will,) but I'll say it here too--AWESOME. I love the story it portrays, the scenery, the motion, the flow. It's the kind of painting you want to frame. Beautiful.

The background is so beautifully done with the clear, warm colors. The far off, slightly misty landscape works so well. This pictures makes me wish that autumn would come back.
