Garanuk
by Amberfox
Wow, this is embarrassing to post after working on the calendar and - hopefully - getting better at proportions, poses, and overall body shapes. Ah well, I somehow still like it. This is one of my characters over in my holt, World Paths; she is in Serengeti Mists, Veldtkeepers Faction. The Veldtkeepers bond with the various hooved mammals that roam the equivalent of the African Serengeti, and she is bonded to an oryx. I tried to draw her in the sparse treeline area but I don't think I quite succeeded. Anyway, here is Garanuk and her near 3D macuahuitl (gotta love those things).

How do you get so crazy much detail in your drawings? O,o
The macuahuitl has to be the most amazing weapon I've ever seen. XD |

I'm obsessive; stop me before I add more detail! Yeah, I'm a big fan of the macuahuitl myself. I thought she'd need a bit more reach than usual (being on the back of an oryx), but still have the design set up for close confrontation as well. So, I stuck it on a long pole and gave it metal blades between the varied obsidian ones...and a spearhead on the opposite side of it.

You've got an Inkers eye and hand, loving the shadow and depth hatch work also the background detail ( backgrounds are my Epic Failure cause I'm a lazy butt). You have the style of an artist I really like by the name of Dark One creator of the comic series Animal Mystic.

Man, love love LOVE that weapon! Very cool! It reminds me a lot of Polynesian weapons I've admired, too -- the ones studded with shark-teeth and such. I particularly like how you've given this one two "business ends".

Wah! So are crazy! Awesome! Oh gosh, those details! That weapon is pretty hardcore. So cool! I also love her heroic stance and that always impressive flowing hair.
I just think her right hand looks a tiny bit awkward, maybe the wrist is not quite right? But as always, so nice to see art from you! |

What an unique weapon choice! I always love seeing different weapons! because I love ancient weaponry! how did you come up with a idea to combine spear and macuahuitl together like that? and nice detailing on the leaves and everything, I never add details that much, because I get tired of my own art so damn fast!... however, may suggest one thing regarding the spearhead?... there is one thing you could do that would make it a lot more efficient...

Rowtiger: thank you very much! I will have to look into the artist you mentioned; I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the comic series or artist. I do get carried away a LOT when it comes to details and backgrounds. Sigh.
Eregyrn: The macuahuitl's Polynesian cousins include the pahoa i a me lei o mano and the lei o mano, and I'm sure there are more. I considered giving her something similar, but that didn't make much sense considering where she's from. Still, I also preferred the idea of the macuahuitl overall because while both are effective and very lethal, the lei o mano (knife version) and pahoa i a me lei o mano (spear version) can literally be ripped apart after few attacks, even after one. Since the macuahuitl uses obsidian, it tends to hold together better longer and go through heftier things with larger bones (horses come to mind). I've seen people get badly hurt just practicing with one. |

Treefox: Thank you! The wrist...I think you're right. Any suggestions? I think the bend is a little off or maybe the forearm. Hmm.
Berit: I'm also HUGE into ancient weaponry and I actually collect bladed weapons, bows (except compounds), and ancient weapons when I can find them. The idea of the combo was because I thought she needed a weapon with serious reach since she spends a lot of time on her oryx (her holt migrates long distances twice a turn) but something she could use to stab AND swing effectively well. Plus, I like the idea and I'd love one. So, you left me in suspense - what is the one thing I could do that would make it a lot more efficient?! |

haha! me too! I actually make weapons as well as collect them!... metal is my thing, but other materials are wonderful as well!... well if I may suggest, I think the spearhead would actually work a little better if it resembled the African Assegai spear more, for it is a blade that can be used for slashing as well as piercing, plus, it doesn't have the harpoon effect that spears with sharp back spikes have, it doesn't get anchored in the flesh of the prey or victim, weapon spears usually are designed to avoid getting anchored, for it leaves the wielder vulnerable and open for attacks by others... thanks for hearing me out! and I just love unique weapon choices!...
