Dancing Vlugzand
by Afke
Another old picture I no longer have online somewhere else. Still love it a lot! Even have it framed so I can use it at my exhibitions.
I drew it for her player, Esther, as a birthday gift. Wanted to give it a feel of "snapshots". Done with pastel pencils.

What you do with colors and characters will always be wondrous to me. The way you used the pens here is so, so soft and yet saturated. The lighting from low right is such a great and unusual idea! Her dancing and the pure expressions really capture me.

I understand why you've framed this.
You do such wonderous things with light and movement. |

I'd really love to see the full size image of this; I bet it's even more impressive. I agree with Mirror on the play of light and movement. I think the background suits it perfectly as well. It almost appears as a panel of Vlugzand dancing; the left side is where she's really in motion and her entire mind and body are caught up in the mood of the dance while the panel on the right is maybe when the song is nearing the end and she's not as emotional as the panel on the right. Does that make sense...or am I just reading too much into it? It's been a REALLY long day for me. Anyway, I love the folds you have done in the top in both panels and the highlighting in the skirt on the right. Good reason to love this illo - I hope Esther did as well! I know I would.

I love how she looks like she is enjoying the moment of the dance. Also the soft shading adds to the emotion of the moment.
