River Twine 2012 Calendar - November
by Eregyrn
River Twine Holt has once again done a calendar, for 2012 (all art viewable here). I had to fill in for November.
So here are (clockwise from upper right): Dreamflight, Newt, Beetle (and her wolf-friend Rooter), Rill, and Cinder, trying to get a look at some screech-owls whose nest-hole has been discovered. In the background, a surprised fisher looks on.
I did the setting from various reference photos I took of some walks in local woods -- a stand of white pines with some American beech thrown in. The fisher is from references too, some that I've taken of a new arrival at a wildlife-care place I volunteer at, but as this was a first attempt, it doesn't manage to capture this big weasel's charm. Hopefully will get better at that!

All the details plus so many characters! Has drawing a picture with multiple characters become easier to you?
Love the end-of-autumn-mood. The trees and the lighting are brilliant. I like the winter clothes of everybody. Looks practical and still keeps the normal color scheme. I also think that weasel is not so bad at all. Sure is huge! |

Thanks! I don't know about "easier", but yes, I forgot to note, that this piece is a rare (for me) example of my drawing all of the characters together on the same page (rather than drawing them separately and then compositing them together). At the time, I fancied it would be quicker to do it that way, and I was in a bit of a time crunch. It came out okay, size-consistency-wise. The things I'm not wild about would likely have been true even if I'd done it the other way.
Fishers *are* pretty huge - something like the third-largest member of the North American weasel family. They're about the size of river otters, about two and a half feet in length. They have a reputation for being "vicious", but really this just means that they are avid and successful predators, who will not hesitate to try to practice upon domestic animals (including housepets). In reality they are *even cuter* than this. |
