Tyleet Portrait
by joselle
Did this one a while ago, I was trying out a "new" rendering technique at the time, and feel that I totally over-rendered. I go between kinda digging this piece and absolutely hating it, but I'm in an ok spot with it right now, so I thought I'd post it, quick!
Tyleet has, I think, one of the most difficult hairstyles to draw. It's so distinctive, yet it can get out of hand so easily. Orange explosion. Lol.
And Tyleet apparently uses a lot of eyeliner...

I actually thought it was CG for a second; is that what you mean with over-render? In any case you nailed Tyleet's trademark sweeter-than-sweet expression - at least I think so, Tyleet always was hard for me to capture. As you say, she's a very distinct lady.
Well done! |

Such a doll-face :3 I love these portraits you did, they're absolutely wonderful.

(**dodges in advance**)
The only point, which I think looks a bit weird, is, that her lashes are pointing in all directions. But I like the doll-like result of this portrait of Tyleet (the "over-rendering" just works here)^^ |

While über-lovely and sweet this doll-ish effect actually always made me find this pic a bit scary. She's really like a doll here. I mean like if you move her head her eyes would open and close automatically.
But I am also just jealous of that unbelievably soft skin, lips and hair... |

Yeah... I think what hits me the most about this one is that with the "over-rendering", the face looks "too smooth", like an actual porcelain doll (rather than a real person with such fine skin that you might describe it as being "like" porcelain -- and I think the effect is heightened here because of the very cool, bluish tones of her face, it doesn't look warm like skin); and the eyes are rendered in a very realistic, even hyper-realistic style... but it kind of looks out of place next to the more painterly, sketchy hair, and outfit. So there's a bit of dissonance going on -- especially since the hair is so close to (framing, brushing in front of) the features. That "unreal" hair doesn't "go" with the very-real eyes. So the parts are each gorgeous in their way, but overall it's a bit of an unsettling effect.

Yeah, I think I managed it best with the scouter portrait : http://www.elfquestfanart.com/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=1736 but here I got too excited with my soft skin brushes. And it doesn't help that I didn't give her neck any real structure. It's just a cylinder shoved into a turtle neck... lol

I remember when I first saw this one I thought it was doll, since it looks so incredibly realistic.

She looks just like a BJD (ball jointed doll). It's such a whimsical looking picture of her, very nice.

I think this looks nice, it sure looks different than other pictures in the gallery! for some reason, she reminds me of Maetel from Galaxy express 999 at times... I must say that I really like the skincolor you used here!... looks wonderful!...

That face and those eyes scare me. While I adore how you did her hair! There's movement in it.

I love the hair, too, and of course her eyes. It looks so realistic <3.

I particularly love her lips and the pretty glisten on her jewelry.

I collect dolls known as BJD's and when I first saw this picture that's what I thought it was! Since I love the dolls I didn't find this picture scary or eerie. The only critique I have is the top of her outfit doesn't look as "real" as the rest of the picture. I love it none the less ^^

You know, I think branchscamper has a point. Not only that Tyleet looks like a ball joint doll, but that the most distracting thing is her top. It looks almost cartoony in contrast to the porcelain skin and the shine on her gold chain.
