Welcome to the Goatrider Appreciation Station~ see below for more information on this obscure canon tribe. ;D

Goatriders are elves descended of Two-Spear who lived and traveled across the northern plains. I'm not sure if their progeny are Go-Backs but their culture and characteristics would suggest it. The had more children outside of recognition and thus began to lose some of their "magical" and telepathic abilities. They did retain the ability to "feel" their own kind, no matter how far away they are. During the end of Two-Spear's life and thereafter, they practiced animal husbandry for their mounts because their wolves did not thrive on the plains and eventually died off. These are frisky, young kids, as older goats have massive, curling horns, thick as a forearm, that form large loops of three or more.

Goatriders are tanner than their forest kin and tend to wear looser, more plain clothing. (These ladies are in their parade wear - hooray for artistic license! It doesn't say if they wear much ornamentation, but I assume they're closer in dress to Go-Backs than Wolfriders.) They hunt in groups and carry light weapons, like spears, long knives, and bolas.

Two Shadow, the one in the back, is the mysterious lady elf whom Freefoot recognized according to Volume Four: Against the Wind of The Blood of Ten Chiefs novels. She is described as slender and wild-looking. They had a child of recognition named Hawkcatcher, who was the eldest of his offspring. (He had three more - Tanner and two others - with lifemate, Starflower.) Goldmane, the lady elf in the front, is known as a hunt leader, tall, with a magnificent mane of golden hair.

The more you know! *shooting star*

*gasp* S-someone drew fanart of the Goatriders! *dances in celebration* This tribe, despite only being mentioned in one story in the anthologies, pretty much forgotten and stamped as non-canon is my favorite tribe. They are just so fascinating, especially the bola wapon they use. So is their burial ritual, buried and covered by stones. Probably to hinder the longtooth cats from scavenging on the bodies. Riding goats is badass and cool, no matter what people say :P Probably more comfortable than riding wolves.

Erhem, fangasm aside, I just love this. I know that they are said to clothe rather plainly, but I always see them as having decoration on their clothes. So your artistic license passes through my eyes. :D I love the fringes on Two Shadow's clothes, and Goldmane's headpiece. Goldmane's clothing really stands out.

As for critique, It seems like the goat Goldmane is riding has horns which blocks it's field of vision. Perhaps if you lifted the horn itself a little higher it would help?

But all in all, it is so wonderful to see fanart of the best tribe ever! *dances*

Oh, and when I finish opening a thread dedicated to this tribe on a group at Scroll of Colors dedicated to the anthologies, can I post a link to this piece?

This is... brilliant! The style, the dynamics, the movement, the details, all if these aspects pile together to make this wonderful kick-ass piece. I so want to know more about this tribe! You say they are part of the canon? o.o

Icebird: They were introduced in a story of the Blood of Ten Chief's anthologies. It showed up in the fourth, called Against The Wind. The story is titled Firstborn, and was written by Allen L. Wold.

As for being canon... well, most of the stories not be be included in he comics are canon. However, if the story was changed in the comic, then the comic is considered the correct one. Most of the stories in the anthologies are better, but that is my opinion.

Oooh yes, I start to remember that story! The idea to put that into fanart alone is wonderful!
I love how confident these two ladies are. I like their clothing and why not take some artistic liberties, especially as they have never been officially depicted?
The goats also look wonderful! Sturdy and actually quite ride-able!
The sepia tone fits the plain setting wonderfully.

This really is such a neat concept -- was fascinated to hear that they are actually canon!  (Of a sort, at least.)  I love how expressive the characters are.  And the sepia execution of it is great; it gives it an "old west" feel for me, which seems appropriate to the plains setting.
