RTH: taal WIP
by Eregyrn
Working on something for the current round of contests at RTH -- this is Blacksnake and Greenweave in the midst of a game of taal.
Ah, taal... to the best of my knowledge, it was created within the BOTC context and there's only one comic (BOTC 5) that illustrates it at all. How annoying is it, therefore, that within the comic itself, even from panel to panel, it is depicted in an extremely inconsistent way? Very, very annoying. (The size of the sticks that the elves use to tag each other varies, without explanation; elves who are supposed to be playing the game are frequently depicted as not holding a taal-stick at all, until one suddenly appears in their hand in a panel; etc.).
Still, we have taal at RTH, so I wanted to draw it.
Here's hoping I don't screw it up as background gets added; and that I can make the sequence of the action apparent.

Oh wow, that movement is beautiful! It's nice to also see black and white linework from you. The intricate stitching on Blacksnake's west is gorgeous. And I definitely think that you did a great job on Greenweave's leg perspective.
On taal: I remember that issue! I was all |

Is that like capture the flag......? Haven't heard of it before, but I imagine the game varies with each tribe. Looking forward to the coloring. And I hope Greenweave doesn't get too bludgeoned...d..d..d

Thanks, Treefox. About taal confusion: I know, right? Grrr. (That issue also drives me up the wall because I can't get past the mere existence of the swordfeet and their horrible, horrible design. I am a big fan of dromaeosaurs, and they could be a really interesting creature to deal with (although I don't think they belong ANYwhere in the Ice-Age-esque world of canon EQ), but looking at the way the artist did them in that issue just... pains me...
But I digress. Midnight, taal is basically a "tag" game; I think the reasoning behind it is that it's hunting/stalking practice. All the players have a number of tokens. If you can sneak up on and tag another player, you get one of his tokens. The person with the most tokens at the end wins. RTH has run an RP-like taal game a few times (Heidi runs it), and I'm sure we'll do it again. (It's fun, but kind of confusing. I had to keep charts and little maps.) Here, the action will hopefully be clearer in the final version, but Blacksnake has just missed tagging Greenweave. No bludgeoning here. |

Even with the confusion of the original game I think I get the premise from the sketch - I can't wait to see it finished! And I agree with Treefox, your black/white art is wonderful!

Ah yes, the swordfeet... I mean I have no profound knowledge on dinosaurs, but I had a dinosaur phase, which came from my dragon obsession. Closest thing to a dragon were dinosaurs... well, anyway those swordfeet looked just so terribly bland!! So rubber-y. No structure and depth. Just meh.
Wasn't that also the issue where somebody kicked that bear cub like a football? I remember looking with my friends at that panel with a mixture of disbelief and having a laughing fit. I also read that story in the novel, but I got to admit I hardly remember it... I would like to add that playing taal actually sounds like fun! |
