Ambrosiasp and Mirage
by Amberfox
Color version of the black and white illo I did a while back. I finally managed to find a scanner that didn't slaughter the colors - hurray! Thanks, Leg. It's still not quite right, but it's close. I really should learn to use the computer for coloring. Anyway, Ambrosiasp and Mirage are inseperable lifemates and the Elders of Shadowstriders Holt. Neither have a sense of humor, and they're lots of fun to game.
Ambrosiasp is my character, Mirage is Janett Beasley, and World Paths is run by me.

Scanners sure can be annoying at times... all colors look odd when afterwards... I think these have a nice smooth coloring, what do you use to color your art? the skin tones look wonderful. I really can't understand how you have the patience to color hair! I can never color hair so well!...

Most of what I use for coloring my art is color pencil and grease pencils. Grease pencils are perfect for black and red, the green and blue can be dull for some details. Actually, the skin tones look so much better in person; in fact, it was the skin tone that came out the worst. On most scanners I tried, the skin tone was terrible and blothcy and the multiple colors I used for Ambrosiasp's silver hair just didn't come out at all. For skin tones, I used about three different pencils and tried to smudge and blend with fingers and tissue. Ambrosiasp's hair I used three grey pencils and three blues, Mirage's I used four browns and two yellows, feathers were four colors, the green had three shades, and violets were two pencils. Patience, well, I suppose, but you've no idea how excited I am when I lay down that last color stroke!
Oh, Leg is my brother's nickname (Lee). It was his hightech scanner I used to get this. |

Whew! I could never use so many colors! I'm like a little kid when I draw, I get distracted easily, and sometimes start to draw another drawing while I'm supposed to draw the one in front of me!... I think it's wonderful how others have the patience to color like you do... and I gotta say... I think traditional coloring looks better than computer coloring, that is only a opinion, but for me, it is like that... you really do smooth colors... I can't see any white lines in the coloring, that is just awesome...

Oh yay! You should definitely color more of your stuff! Looks great! Mirage's eyes are so beautiful. A pretty lovely idea to make them multi-colored.
By the way, I am really glad that you are joining the fanart calendar. I was disappointed when I didn't find you on the list at first. And you do lovely underwater stuff, so I am looking forward to your Moonmirror! |

I'm a fanatic when it comes to details and have a tendency to tune everything else out when working on art. I still feel as if I'm not as good as I COULD be with coloring, and I'm playing with shading and blending with any and all color pencils I can get ahold of. I prefer traditional coloring to computer work because it just seems more....personal for lack of a better way of expressing it. Not that computer coloring is by any means BAD; the gorgeous art posted here is a testiment to that.
Thank you for the wonderful comments! Mirage's eyes are what I termed "fire opal" among my roleplay gaming group ages ago. Fire opals (or black opals) often have a base color with flecks of multiple other colors throughout, and I've seen people with something similar so I just made it more obvious and applied it to elfin eyes. My only regret with this illo is that Mirage's eyes were a bit small to really work in details of the flecks so they're sloppier than what I'd prefer. Sorry in advance, Treefox; I had to skimp on details for the calendar. I HAD a turtle with Moonmirror initially but edited it out, otherwise I'd have had to reduce the art even further than I already had (which was already tiny). I hate size constraints! |
