RTH: Blacksnake's inner Grahn

The story behind this piece is that in the OQ and SABM, the subplot of Dewshine's Recognition with Tyldak contained a couple of panels showing how Dewshine's soul looked to Tyldak -- much more wolf-hybrid-looking than her outward appearance. I always thought that was a fascinating detail. It was implied that Leetah saw much the same thing when she Recognized Cutter, and as we know, it took her a while to accept it as well. But to the best of my knowledge, canon didn't give us other visual examples related to the other wolfriders.

I really like the idea, though, that there's this wolfy-looking aspect to the wolfrider's soul, that their soul-mates see; but to them, it's an unremarkable part of everything that they share with each other.

This was a quick "proof of concept" piece; I wanted to see if I could work out what my RTH character Blacksnake's soul might look like. (I don't feel like the wolf-hybrid elves are my strongest suit, so I was unsure about it when I started out.) Having done that, I'd like to use the concept in other pieces at some point.

Prismacolor black pencil, Copic marker coloring; effects in PS.

I like it! And it looks good on him too. :D
Also, I always thought that perhaps other kinds of elves might see the wolfrider's soul like this, because it's an aspect that frightens them. I was thinking that perhaps wolfriders might see a different thing... :) Something a little more cuddly, warm, welcome, equal.

Oh, I agree!  Conceptually, for pureblooded elves who aren't even used to the concept of the wolfbloods, I can imagine how a glimpse of this would just be completely shocking on its own.  But for the wolfriders -- if it's just a part of their self-concept, then they'd definitely see more nuance in it.

As I said, I want to use this concept again, in a difference context.  Like a Recognition or interaction between two very in-tune lifemates.  I expect that's when you'd see the warm/cuddly side. ;-)  Even for Grahn.  I'm not sure it would LOOK all that different (except in expression), and it's interesting to contemplate that a person's reception of it doesn't have so much to do with how it looks as how accepting of it they are.

The first experimental draft I did just... did not work.  Threw that one away.  It didn't have enough expression.  I had to realize that if this is a picture of the soul, it has to have a lot of... emotional action in it.

I'd love to see other characters done this way.  :D  But then... part of me thinks that maybe some other characters would look more warm/cuddly by default than Blacksnake does.  But another part of me always likes the idea that even the gentlest wolfrider is still wolfy and can be fierce at heart. ;-)

Grrrraaaa! He certainly looks the part of his genetics. I could see why that would be shocking to a 'pure blood'. I bet he looks that way to his kinsfolk when all stirred up.....I know I've seen that look/transformation on certain folks I know.....
I love the coloring with the blues and greys and how it makes his amber eyes pop out.....well, not literally pop out, you know what I mean. :)

You actually managed to make this still look like Blacksnake, or, you always manage to make Blacksnake look like his soul would actually look like this. I'd be very tempted to draw some characters this way, but sadly I just don't have the time.

I agree this looks like Blacksnake while being the soul's image of him as part wolf.  I also really like the use of blue and grey with the strong, bold use of the amber-brown eyes, very striking!  Somehow, I think Wolfriders and wolfbloods in general might see this spirit self as normal, expected, even desirable.  Just a thought.  Hmmm...the challenge is there; maybe I should draw one or more of my characters as a spirit self.  Interesting...
