Illo for "Breathing Again"
by Eregyrn
I just did this as part of the just-concluded contest at River Twine, "A Thousand Words", which was to produce illustrations for existing stories (or to write stories for existing works of art). This is an illustration for a story I co-wrote with Ellen (then-owner of Honey) called "Breathing Again". Honey and Blacksnake share a moment while out on a hunt.
THIS IS NOT A RECOGNITION. Just thought I'd get that out of the way.
Compositionally, it's intentionally a bit of an homage to Wendy Pini's famous image of Bearclaw & Joyleaf's Recognition -- given the action of the story it was impossible not to have that piece in mind, so I tried to make it so that this wouldn't be a close copy, but the influence of that piece absolutely has to be acknowledged.
The moose is also reffed from... well, let's just say I stared at a lot of pictures of dead moose and moose taxidermy. I feel like the moose is kind of small... but it's supposed to be a young bull, so... *handwave*.
Basic fine-line marker inking, Copic marker coloring, sky and lighting effects in Photoshop.

You keep getting better and better. This reminds me why you're one of my favorite EQ fanartists out there.

This also leaves me breathless! The emotion between the two is very well portrayed. The back ground is amazing indeed. Did you use a photo for the clouds? The dark greens and browns are not only lovely but also help focus on the two characters more. I always admire your color schemes. I guess I am also envious and am admiring that you keep drawing at a very continuous level. Not concerning skill but mere picture output. It's great that you don't have big breaks of months or years in between pictures like me.

Thanks, guys!
I didn't use a photo for the clouds/sky, although I did look at photos of dawn skies, to contemplate the colors. I have a set of steam brushes in Photoshop (am happy to provide the link to anyone who wants to get them), and at least in this instance, was able to use them to create clouds. I first laid down the clouds in a dark pink color, and then went over some of the lower edges of them in a brighter orange. So I was able to get various layers of intensity on the clouds, which against the sky color and with the lighting effect (also a PS thing), gave them a consistency I was pleased with. |

As much as I would like to get that brush, I don't have Photoshop. But man, those clouds just are perfect. To me they just look real. Thank you for always sharing your ways of drawing. I find it very informative and helpful.

The pose here seems so more natural then the one in the Bearclaw/Joyleaf picture.
I love the look of the leafs. *Must read story now.* |

Ah, intense and beautiful! The only thing that really pops out at me is Honey's left shoulder; it should stick out more and the neck of her garment be shifted slightly left so her poor neck doesn't look so long and twisted awkwardly. The emotion in this piece is lovely though. I especially like how you pay such careful attention to line thicknesses and shading. It really balances what could potentially be a very busy picture.
