Tears for Fountainbraid

Another golden oldie. Story illo for Pat McKay's "Aftermath" in Holt of Grand Illusions. Fountainbraid (Veldee Banks) was a cub that desperately wanted to be a part of a group of elitist snobs, and got caught and slain by humans in an attempt to prove herself worthy. Fingers pointed and tempers flared, so a Council was assembled to determine what happened and the fates of those involved. At the mention of Fountainbraid, little Sapphire began wailing and crying, clutching to his surprised mother. We learn he had a secret crush on her.

At the Council in background l-r: Freesoul (Wendy Craig), Truestar (Robert Beasley), Thorn (Janett Beasley) FOREGROUND: father Waterfall (Aura Moser) consoling Sapphire who's clutching Nightfire (both Krissy Hutson), and Moonfeather (Danette Devlin) obscured behind Nightfire.

Wow, what a sad story behind this illo! I can't get enough of Thorn's hair! *staaaaaaaaaaare drool* Poor, poor Sapphire. I must say he DOES look like a cub and not a down-scaled adult, so that's well done too. :)

Thorn's hair is a pain to ink, but the effect is nice. The story is really lengthy and hard to summarize, but this illo is about poor Sapphire admitting his crush on Fountainbraid and bursts into tears at the mere mention of her name. Glad I was effective with Sapphire; it's not easy making a cub look like a cub instead of some weird puppet. The height and features differences are often distorted in drawings.

I never got to read this story, I joined just after it. I love this illo, that poor cub's face is awesome, hard to draw emotions like that.

I think that's my favorite aspect of this illo; the face on Sapphire. I also like Freesoul, Truestar, and Thorn.
