This was for myself XD Newt
Okay I confess he came out a little creepy here, but I think that's the mix of the pale skin and the Albino eyes. O.o

But I think you were able to catch the way albino eyes look very well! I still think he looks cute. Mad-cute maybe, but cute.

I thought that albino meant the iris was colorless, thus turning the iris red, but not the pupil (the pupil actually is some sort of hole). I don't know for sure though, I know way too little about it!
But other than the creepyness, I think this is a very sweet portrait of Newt! He's such a nice guy, offering us a well meant smile. :] |

Thanks .. Haha I think that could be it .. creepy cute little Newt
@ Afke. I thought so as well and there are a lot of albinos who do have a red pupil, but I looked it up for Newt and along with the description given on RTH I looked up Albinos and it turned out that a lot seem to have more of this pinkish pupil and the blue in the iris. I used this as ref : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f7/OCA1_Auge.jpg |

Hmm, I just looked at the reference link. I can't tell, is that really a pink pupil or is that hobgoblin eye from the photo? Anyone else able to tell? (Either way, even if it WAS hobgoblin eye, then I guess it would just mean this was a photo of Newt.... )

Human eye I have it from a article about albinos. There it is explained as well that albinism often just makes the eye colors lighter and not always ends up making the typical red eyes with humans So brown get's light brown, blue get's light blue and so on. If you google Albinisem you will find many with light but not red eyes.

Yeah, but I'm talking about the pupil specifically -- shouldn't it still be black? I guess not, albino rats don't have any black in *their* eyes, and I would assume they have pupils too. Totally cool, the things you learn while researching art references, isn't it? Neat!

Wow, odd looking indeed. Still, to me that photo looks as if the red is from the flashlight.
Interesting info you found though, about the eyes' colors in albinos. We keep on learning new things every day. |

In a human, I can believe the pink effect is from a flash (i.e. the common "red-eye" problem in photos taken with flashes). But for EQ elves, Wendy's style even from an early stage has been to make their eyes inhuman-looking by giving them pupils of the same color as the iris, only darker. (In the comics interiors, yes, pupils were done black, because of the b&w reproduction. But even in the Cutter portrait of the first issue's back cover, Cutter's pupils are a darker shade of blue. That suggests to me that this was her intention from early on, even though it's not consistently done in all pictures -- the Leetah portrait on the back of issue #2 uses black pupils.)
I don't know how we would explain this, quasi-"scientifically", but it's certainly a hallmark of EQ elf style. So, I think it's consistent with that to do an albino elf's eyes with a pinkish pupil. (That's definitely how I've done Newt from the start, too. I generally do all my elves with colored pupils, unless the size is too small for it to be seen.) |
