Leaving
by Afke
My first wolfriding picture ever! Lookit, done in 1999! I was really into crosshatching back then, worked great on the trees but I failed at the wolf's fur. Drawn with black ballpoint pen.
Was done as an illustration for an offline fanzine called Water Valley (part of the offline Stormholt, set up for all those people who didn't get in the dicebased group), but I later took those extra WV characters to the online Staartjager Vallei.
Zwarte Steen is Vuurhaar's father and in the picture he's deciding about leaving the holt, because he's causing too much trouble with his agressive behaviour and bad temper. Only elf who liked him and would miss him was his son.

wow, this is actually pretty cool... I like the story behind this and somehow this picture has depressing tone to it... very interesting piece... what did he choose?... this picture actually has a great deal of that "old Elfquest" feeling about it... it instantly made me remember the Original quests madcoil part...

Well, he's sweating because he's nervous about leaving. He already made up his mind about it and then Vuurhaar dropped by to say hello and suddenly he started doubting his decision. He still left though, but it was harder.

The atmosphere in this piece overall is really great. The character is very intriguing and expressive, and the background really adds to the feeling of the piece. The wolf is reminding me a lot of the first wolves I did back in '87 or so. I really should dig one of those pieces up to redo for the then/now challenge. ;-)

Awww. What happened to him?
The crosshatching really gives the picture a really dark edge. O,o |
