Lispel
by Afke
My cousin gave me this really pretty, rough, grayish paper with white freckles. Yes, freckled paper! And I'm loving it.
Had to present you the father of Zoetgras as well of course. This is Lispel, gatherer and inventor. He's only 20 years older than his daughter and so they are more like best friends.
Drawn and shaded with pencils, highlights with white pencil.

Me too wants freckled paper!!
Very nice - I really like the space between his teeth, gives him character! Oh, and since I'm endlessly curious about languages, I just have to ask... what does "Lispel" mean in Duch? |

I too, like his teeth! really gives him character!... the paper sure seems interesting!... haven't drawn in a freckled paper myself! is it different to draw on a paper like that?... if you compare it to an ordinary paper?...

Lispel means 'lisp', and it's also what the gap between his teeth is about. When he was a boy he spoke with a lisp (although technically I don't think it's possible that way, but it sure was fun to write his dialogue).
I kept the name because the sound of it just suits him / belongs with him, even though he speaks normally now. Healer played speech therapist. The grey paper with freckles is great to make these soft pencil drawings on, because you get depth very easily with just a little dark and a little white on the paper. I need a new white pencil though, my nephew's pencil worked a lot better! |

Doh, should've guessed that! I agree with Berit, such details really make the characters come alive

Lispel grew up quite nicely! I still have a lovely color illo you did some time ago that had him with his best friend as cubs/kids. I saved it to my computer so I could do a drawing of him as well, although sadly, I never did get around to it. I still can, though; never too late!
And I haven't forgotten; I'll be sending the other two illos of your characters soon - promise! |

Ahh, another lovely portrait here. Nice shading on the clothing, and the shapes of his neck are great, too!
